Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is Sweden’s largest individual research program ever. WASP provides a platform for academic research and education, fostering interaction with Sweden’s leading technology companies. Part of the initiative in AI within WASP deals with increasing our understanding of fundamental mathematical principles behind AI.

WASP announces six assistant professorships within mathematics for AI. Each position comes with an attractive start package. The positions included in this call are at Chalmers/University of Gothenburg, KTH, Lund university, Umeå university and Uppsala university.

KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Engineering Sciences KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

Subject field
Mathematics with specialization in geometry and mathematical statistics in artificial intelligence.

Subject description
The subject field should be interpreted in a wide sense with focus on fundamental research within geometry and mathematical statistics, intended to deepen the understanding for the studies of artificial intelligence. Examples of areas are algebraic topology, topological data analysis, algebraic geometry, representation theory, mathematical statistics and stochastic geometry.

Duties include research, teaching, supervision and some administrative duties. Teaching duties will correspond to approximate 25% of a full time volume. The employment is part of a WASP initiative on mathematics of artificial intelligence and the assistant professor is expected to lead a research group with at least one postdoc and one Ph.D. student.

The candidate is expected to contribute to the activities of the WASP program as well as the activities of the department of Mathematics including the Brummer & Partners MathDataLab. Involvement in the new specialization towards mathematical data science within the master program in applied and computational mathematics is also expected.

The assistant professor will be given opportunity to develop their independence as researcher and gain accreditation that may allow them to acquire other academic positions with higher eligibility requirements (see Chapter 4, Section 12 a of the Higher Education Ordinance). Following KTH regulations, the assistant professor can apply and shall be assessed for promotion to the level of associate professor.

An individual who has obtained a PhD or equivalent research expertise is qualified for appointment as an assistant professor. Candidates who met those qualifications within five years prior to expiration of the application period should be prioritized. Other candidates may also be considered if there are extraordinary grounds for doing so. Extraordinary grounds refer to illness, parental leave or similar circumstances.

Grounds of assessment
The assessment criteria for appointment as an assistant professor at KTH are stated in KTH's appointment procedure, section 1.3, and apply in relation to the employment profile laid down.

Of highest importance is the applicant’s

  • degree of research expertise demonstrated through research publications, conference attendance, attendance of research cooperation and also other undertakings in the scientific community such as for example, assignments as a reviewer or expert.
  • potential to qualify for a higher teaching post. This includes the potential for independent development as a researcher and teacher within the subject field in question and also the ability to establish, review and develop the research area in question.
  • international scientific experience and the potential to strengthen the research area within Sweden.

Of second highest importance is the applicant’s

  • interest in and understanding of pedagogical development within the subject field in question.
  • postdoc visits to a research environment other than the university at which the applicant defended their doctoral thesis. In application-oriented areas, experience from research and development work within the industry or other organizations is considered to correspond to a traditional postdoc visit to another university.

It is also important that the applicant has

  • an interest in and understanding of leadership in an academic environment, third-stream activities, and awareness of diversity and equal treatment issues with a particular focus on gender equality.
  • administrative and other expertise.

Special grounds of assessment for promotion to associate professor
When assessing applications for promotion to associate professor, the applicant's ability to independently initiate and carry out research of high academic quality, published in international publications, the applicant's ability to obtain financing for research operations and the applicant’s pedagogic skills will be assessed. Of highest importance is the applicant's ability to independently establish collaborations and research specializations. It is also of highest importance that the applicant has displayed teaching and supervising expertise. It is also of highest importance that the applicant is able to teach in Swedish by the time of the appointment to associate professor.
