Assist Prof in Mathematics w spec in Probability and Combinatorics in A.I.
Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is Sweden’s largest individual research program ever. WASP provides a platform for academic research and education, fostering interaction with Sweden’s leading technology companies. Part of the initiative in AI within WASP deals with increasing our understanding of fundamental mathematical principles behind AI.
WASP announces six assistant professorships within mathematics for AI. Each position comes with an attractive start package. The positions included in this call are at Chalmers/University of Gothenburg, KTH, Lund university, Umeå university and Uppsala university.

Examples of such mathematics are causal inference, combinatorial studies of directed graph models, probabilistic studies of latent variable models and other multi-scale models as well as related optimization problems.
Duties include research, teaching, supervision and some administrative duties. Teaching duties will correspond to approximate 25% of a full time volume. The employment is part of a WASP initiative on mathematics of artificial intelligence and the assistant professor is expected to lead a research group with at least one postdoc and one Ph.D. student.
The candidate is expected to contribute to the activities of the WASP program as well as the activities of the department of Mathematics including the Brummer & Partners MathDataLab. Involvement in the new specialization towards mathematical data science within the master program in applied and computational mathematics is also expected.
The assistant professor will be given opportunity to develop their independence as researcher and gain accreditation that may allow them to acquire other academic positions with higher eligibility requirements (see Chapter 4, Section 12 a of the Higher Education Ordinance). Following KTH regulations, the assistant professor can apply and shall be assessed for promotion to the level of associate professor.
An individual who has obtained a PhD or equivalent research expertise is qualified for appointment as an assistant professor. Of highest importance is the applicant’s
- degree of research expertise demonstrated through research publications, conference attendance, attendance of research cooperation and also other undertakings in the scientific community such as for example, assignments as a reviewer or expert.
- potential to qualify for a higher teaching post. This includes the potential for independent development as a researcher and teacher within the subject field in question and also the ability to establish, review and develop the research area in question.
- international scientific experience and the potential to strengthen the research area within Sweden.
Of second highest importance is the applicant’s
- interest in and understanding of pedagogical development within the subject field in question.
- postdoc visits to a research environment other than the university at which the applicant defended their doctoral thesis.
