Associate Senior Lecturer in Mathematics
Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is Sweden’s largest individual research program ever. WASP provides a platform for academic research and education, fostering interaction with Sweden’s leading technology companies. Part of the initiative in AI within WASP deals with increasing our understanding of fundamental
mathematical principles behind AI.
WASP announces six assistant professorships within mathematics for AI. Each position comes with an attractive start package. The positions included in this call are at Chalmers/University of Gothenburg, KTH, Lund university, Umeå university and Uppsala university.
Associate Senior Lecturer in Mathematics
Time limited employment (temporary)
Department of Mathematical Sciences
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology has about 200 employees and is one of the largest departments of mathematical sciences in the Nordic countries. The department consists of three divisions: Division of Algebra and Geometry, Division of Analysis and Probability, and Division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics.
We contribute in a significant way to the society by extensive research and education. The environment is supportive, stimulating, and international, and with a continuous flow of international guests. More information about us is available on the website: http://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/math/
The development of artificial intelligence (AI) in a broad sense is one of the most exciting scientific events during this century. The successful development opens unexpected possibilities but also offers big challenges that have to be met. Through the center Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and software Program (WASP-AI) an extensive effort on research about the mathematical questions regarding AI is made, with the aim to give Sweden a leading role in the development. By support from WASP-AI we now have the possibility to recruit several researchers and doctoral students and hereby strengthen our research in the mathematic of Artificial intelligence.
You will be working in an environment with extensive and successful research on computational and theoretical aspects of optimal transport theory, complex geometry, statistical mechanics, and mathematical statistics. We will also, at the same time, recruit a number of doctoral students to work mainly with mathematical questions about Machine learning. Therefore your will have good opportunities to develop your research and to have a strong impact on the growing research environment for AI in Gothenburg.
If you are offered the position you will get very good opportunities to build a leading, international research group. The position is a unique career opportunity for a young research scientist. You will dispose of significant resources: a PhD position, 5 fully financed postdoc years, as well as funds for traveling and invitation of guests.
Specific subject description
Research within the frame of the national effort on artificial intelligence, with emphasis on the increasing and significant connection between Machine learning and Optimal transport theory. This means that the research activities should focus on computational aspects of Optimal transport theory, such as development of effective and large-scale algorithms, motivated by applications in machine learning. Interest in exploring the recently discovered relation between optimal transport and the so-called Generative Adversarial Nets (GANs) is meritorious, and in investigating connections between Machine learning/Optimal transport theory and other areas that are studied at the department, like geometry of spaces of probability measures, Kähler geometry, and Statistical mechanics.
At first hand the duties involve research in mathematics within the scope of the position as well as supervision of the doctoral student and the postdocs that are connected to the position. You can pose your own research questions as well as the project descriptions for postdocs and doctoral student.
Your duties also include teaching up to 25%. You should display initiative in seeking challenges and opportunities for development in your work. You should be willing to challenge traditional ways of working, but also follow decisions and priorities. Many of your duties will be carried out in conjunction with others, so you must be willing to listen and cooperate.
If you have no courses in University teacher’s training you are supposed to take such courses within two years from the start of the employment. You are supposed to be able to teach in Swedish within two years. The university offers Swedish language courses.
The eligibility for this employment follows from the Higher Education Ordinance and the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg. A completed PhD degree in a subject area relevant to the position or equivalent scientific competence is a requirement. An applicant with a foreign degree that is judged to be comparable is also eligible. Priority will be given to the applicants who obtained a PhD degree or achieved equivalent scientific competence at the very latest five years before the expiration date of this announcement. Applicants with an earlier doctorate may also be given primary consideration, if there are special reasons. Special reasons mean leave of absence due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances.
Ability to teach in English or Swedish is a requirement.
The assessment of the applications will be based at first hand on scientific merits and at second hand on pedagogical merits, which will be assessed with the same care.
When assessing your research expertise, special attention is paid to the competence in the subject areas of the position, at first hand documented by publications of high quality. Quality is more important than quantity. Significant scientific contributions after PhD degree are are strongly meritorious, as well as international research experience and potential to enhance the research area in Sweden. Ability to formulate interesting and realistic research program for the subject of the position is an important part of the assessment.
When assessing teaching expertise, special emphasis is placed on the ability to successfully plan and teach courses in mathematics.
The overall assessment of applicants will take into account expertise and developmental potential, ability to carry out the duties of the position, cooperate with others, and contribute to a positive development of the activities at the department. Ability to formulate interesting and realistic research program for the subject of the position is an important part of the overall assessment.
Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, four years

Location: The Department of Mathematical Sciences, Gothenburg
First day of employment: To be agreed
The position as associate senior lecturer is limited to four years and is defined as a career-development position. The purpose of the appointment is to enable you to develop research autonomy and acquire both the research and teaching qualifications required to meet the requirements for a position as senior lecturer (tenure track). The appointment may be extended, though for no more than two years in total, if additional time is needed to attain the purpose of the appointment due to illness, parental leave or other special grounds.
Following a successful assessment, you shall be promoted to an indefinite-term post as a senior lecturer. You find the assessment criteria for promotion here: “Assessment criteria for promotion from associate senior lecturer to senior lecturer” (V 2018/115, date of decision 2018-03-20).
The assessment process will be based on the documents that the applicants submit. The documents from applicants who match the eligibility requirements then go to external experts who write reviews based on the documents the applicants have submitted to the university. Thereafter, a selection of candidates will be made, after which the best ranked applicants will be invited to trial lectures and interviews. The assessment process of merit and experience will take into account, eg. time off for parental leave. The reasons and extent of leave of absence should be specified in the application.
