Communication Manager

The International Land and Forest Tenure Facility is the first and only international, multi-stakeholder institution exclusively focused on securing land and forest rights for Indigenous Peoples and local communities. It provides grants to implement tenure rights under existing law and policy and shares the knowledge, innovations and tools that emerge. The Tenure Facility is dedicated to scaling up recognition of collective land and forest rights globally. This helps reduce conflict and further the achievement of global human rights, environment, and development goals. The Tenure Facility is an international foundation registered in Sweden.

Overview of the position

Reporting to the Chief Operation Officer (COO), and as part of the senior leadership of the Tenure Facility, the Communication Manager will play an integral role in communicating the impacts of the Tenure Facility to global, national and local constituencies, including the public in Sweden. The Communication Manager position requires someone with a track record of high-impact communication successes with the ability to develop the communication profile of a new institution. In addition to professional excellence, the Communication Manager will build a small team in Stockholm and cooperate effectively with the Tenure Facility’s partners around the world.

Overarching responsibilities 

  • Support the Executive Director and COO to establish the Tenure Facility as a highly credible and respected institution among international development institutions and donors
  • Provide effective stewardship of the Tenure Facility
  • Generate mutual trust and respect of local communities and Indigenous Peoples and cultures, with full awareness of the intricacies of relationships among them and their allies and supporters
  • Contribute to the development of the Tenure Facility’s strategic goals and objectives
  • Maintain continuous lines of communication, keeping the Executive Director and COO informed of all critical issues

Job functions 

  • Oversee development and implementation of the Tenure Facility’s communication strategy, focusing on strategic targets (governments, development actors, donors, private sector, Indigenous Peoples and local communities ́ organizations)
  • Participate in annual strategic planning processes, ensuring well-developed communication support to the Tenure Facility’s programs and partners
    Oversee communication of the rationale, story, and impact of the Tenure Facility’s strategies, tools, and lessons learned
  • Develop the Tenure Facility ́s messaging to communicate effectively how tenure rights result in achieving climate change mitigation, sustainable and just development, green growth, and other national and international development goals
  • Work with project leaders and consultants to capture the rationale and impact of Tenure Facility engagements at the country level, and synthesize and communicate successes and lessons learned for wider outreach, including at national levels in coordination with national project leaders
  • Assist the Tenure Facility team to position the Tenure Facility in international arenas for sharing lessons, strategies, and tools to scale up the implementation of collective land rights
  • Develop, promote, and ensure consistency of the Tenure Facility’s branding and messaging
  • Develop and update audience-specific factsheets and messaging documents that communicate to climate change, development, and tenure reform constituencies
  • Manage the Tenure Facility’s communication product development, including the writing and delivery of key reports, newsletters, and website content
  • Manage the Tenure Facility’s media engagement, including the preparation of communication tools targeting various audiences (press releases, op-eds, mailings, video-messages, and Q&A documents) for dissemination at key moments
  • Work with project leaders and consultants to develop and implement national-level communication strategies that incorporate climate change and development objectives, with a specific focus on scaling up secure tenure rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
  • Work with project leaders and consultants to capture and share the rationale and impact of Tenure Facility engagements at the country level


  • Proven experience and a demonstrated ability to both lead and build the capabilities of a diverse team
  • At least 10 years’ professional experience overall, with a minimum of five years’ senior communication leadership experience operating multiple international programs
  • Undergraduate degree plus a Masters in Communication or similar advanced degree.
  • Successful track record of project reporting and communicating project impacts, preferably experience with Sida, Norad and other major international bi-lateral donors and private foundations
  • Thorough understanding of emerging technology and communication channels and ability to connect global communication with local projects

  • Exceptional capacity for managing people; a team builder who has experience in scaling up organizations; ability to connect staff both on an individual level and in groups
  • Technologically savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors
  • A successful track record in setting priorities; keen analytic, organizational and problem-solving skills which support and enable sound decision making
  • Experience working in Asia, Africa or Latin America
  • Fluent in English and Swedish, with fluency in French and/or Spanish
  • Ability to travel extensively
