The Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies opens two doctoral positions in History and Education
The Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies conducts teaching and research in Archaeology, Philosophy, History, History and Education, History of Science and Ideas, Religious Studies and Theology. See, http://www.idesam.umu.se/english
The research group co-operates with research groups in both educational history and history education in Sweden and abroad. The international contacts are well developed. In 2018, the group will host visiting scholars from Australia and Denmark. The research group arranges conferences frequently and runs a scientific e-journal, Nordic Journal of Educational History. International researchers contribute regularly to postgraduate courses. The group has developed close co-operation with Umeå Research Centre for Social Studies Didactics (UmSOD) and Umeå School of Education.
The two positions are open for applicants within both educational history and history education.
The basic eligibility requirements are having been awarded a degree at second-cycle level, having completed course requirements worth at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle level, or in some other way – either in Sweden or abroad – having acquired largely equivalent knowledge.
In order to meet the specific eligibility requirements for admission to studies in History and Education at third-cycle level (PhD studies), the applicant must have completed at least 30 credits in history at second-cycle level, with an independent project worth at least 15 credits or hold a teacher’s degree in history with an independent project in a relevant area worth at least 15 credits at second-cycle level. Students who have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, either within Sweden or abroad, may be admitted for third-cycle studies after assessment.
Applicants will be ranked with regard to the quality and relevance of their project proposal and of previous essays.
Terms of employment
The successful candidates will be employed for a period of four years. After an initial contract of 12 months there will be prolongations after positive annual evaluations. The time of employment must be research activity orientated and lead to the completion of a PhD thesis. Depending on availability, a PhD student may also work with teaching and administration up to a maximum of 20 % of his/her normal working hours. The period of employment may thus be extended up to a maximum of five years.
All admitted PhD students will have to participate in mandatory activities in the Postgraduate school for the Educational Sciences. The employment will begin on September 3, 2018. Place of work is Umeå University. Salary will follow the local agreement of payment for PhD positions. Employees are expected to contribute actively to the development of the research group. Physically, the employee will be stationed at the Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, where the subject-specific tutoring and supervision takes place. According to the Higher Education Ordinance (Ch. 12), the decision of employment is final.
