The Bergen International Festival was established in 1953 and is the flagship among Scandinavia’s music and theatre festivals. The Festival has established itself as a centre for the Northern European art scene, known for world premieres and new productions of music, opera, theatre and dance and a diverse programme profile. Unique venues such as Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg’s own home and the 750-year-old royal hall Håkonshallen constitute a rich historical frame around a vibrant festival which gives audiences hundreds of live, exploring events at more than 40 stages indoors and outdoors every year.


Do you want to lead and further develop the flagship among Scandinavia’s festivals for music and performing arts?

We are looking for a new Festival Director who will strengthen and develop Bergen International Festival (Festspillene i Bergen) as a leading international art and music festival.

Our new director has solid experience as a leader in the cultural industry. You are ambitious, visionary and possess solid integrity. You are motivated to ensure that the festival is planned and executed in alignment with Bergen International Festival’s paramount objectives and values: Innovative, reach larger audiences, including younger demographics, with world class quality art, while making the festival play an integral role in the public arena.

The Director will ensure that the festival audience experiences the best of Norwegian and international performances in classical music, dance, opera, theater and other arts.

Together with your skilled colleagues, you will continue to develop a robust organization that eschews positive attitude and sound values. As a leader, you are committed to improve employee satisfaction and productivity to create a strong organizational culture.

The director is responsible for managing relations with important partners, sponsors and cultural institutions locally, nationally and internationally. You will be key to securing the finances and increasing the income of the festival.

The position is a term of four years with the possibility for extension. Anticipated start of employment will be in the spring of 2022. Salary by agreement.
